Spicy Mackerel Chilli Fry (with Tomato Sauce)

A bold starter or side goes great with parathas or as a filling for rolls

Ingredients (Serves 2–3)

  • 1 can mackerel in tomato sauce (use the sauce separately)
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • ½ capsicum/bell pepper, diced
  • 2–3 green chillies, chopped (adjust heat)
  • 1 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder
  • ½ tsp pepper powder
  • ½ tsp soy sauce (optional)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Salt, if required

Tips

  • Use as a spicy filling for wraps or stuff into pav for a street-food twist.
Instructions
    1. Separate the mackerel pieces from the sauce. Keep both aside.
    2. Heat oil in a pan, sauté onion, capsicum, and green chillies until soft.
    3. Add chilli powder, pepper, and a little salt. Stir for a few seconds.
    4. Pour in the reserved tomato sauce, mix well, and let it thicken slightly.
    5. Add the mackerel gently and toss to coat. Cook for 2–3 minutes.
    6. Finish with lemon juice. Serve hot.
